Access to Betfair if blocked in my country

Postby whitesnake » Fri Oct 09, 2015 7:23 pm

Recently in my country a lot of websites were declared illegal.
Luckily Betfair is not among them.

If this will be the case in the future I would like to know if accessing Betfair through cymatic hides the IP of my network card or if the ISP and Betfair see the IP as if I would access the BF website.

Hi Whitesnake,

Yes the ISP and Betfair can both see your IP address. There are various ways that people can change their apparent IP address to overcome regional problems, for example, using Proxy servers or using a Virtual Private Servers in another country.

If Betfair themselves decide to withdraw service from your country (rather than access merely being blocked by your government/ISP), then they will also ban your access if your account is registered with a contact address or credit card address residing in the wrong country.

Kind regards,

Gavin

Hi Whitesnake,

Pretty much any UK based VPS will probably be good and there are plenty to choose from. Obviously you'll need to choose a server running Windows (usually they come with Windows Server 2008, or later).

In the coming months I am hoping to start offering VPS rental as a service, located with the fastest possible connection to Betfair.

Kind regards,

Gavin

Actually I mean VPS (Virtual Private Server), which means a computer in a hosted data centre, that you can remotely log in to and control. Virtualisation technology/software is used to segment a private server into multiple virtual servers residing on the same hardware.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is something different, which might also solve the problem, assuming that the IP address that is presented to remote party, is the IP address of the VPN, rather than the IP address of the user that has connected to the VPN.

Kind regards,

Gavin

Hi darrynwalker,

I don't know if Betfair blocks access from South Africa or not.

If they do and if you already have a working Betfair account registered to an address in the UK, then you should be able to rent a virtual private server (VPS) with Windows installed, at a data centre hosted in the UK and trade from it remotely. You would need to install Cymatic on the VPS and then trade by logging in remotely using Remote Desktop, which is included with Windows.

You might also be able to trade via just a virtual private network (VPN) which I expect might be cheaper to rent, but could be a bit slower because your traffic would have to be routed through the VPN.

Kind regards,

Gavin
